abram was teaching me a new go variant called "island" or "water" at a convention.

it goes like this: first you play a small game with blue and green stones in a corner of the board, then you scale up the pattern 3-4x and mark off the blue squares with blue stones or masking tape, which acts like the edge of the board.

in the dream we had a separate board for the pattern, otherwise you have to be clever about removing the stones from the small board and remember the shape of the final corner.

there was another variant about cedar trees falling, which used brown masking tape instead of blue. this just blocked off random straight line segments.
