a musical drum which uses frustrated total internal reflection to emit 
synchronized light and sound.

implementation:
clear tough membrane serves as the drum head and light pipe. A ring of 
LED's around the membrane pump light through the drum head. when a 
drumstick or hand impacts the head, there is some deformation which 
bends the drum head enough that light can escape around the site of 
impact. by varying the angle of the LED's and/or the index of refraction 
of the material, this effect can be made quite sensitive to vibration.

the drum-heads would glow softly due to various propagation modes, 
imperfections in the membrane, and dust or oil on the surface of the 
drumhead.
